Groundbreaking Ceremony held on April 17, 2009

The Grand Island Little Theatre is pleased to announce their groundbreaking ceremony which was held on Friday, April 17, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. This event celebrated the beginning of a construction project that will include an addition to the perimeter of the existing Hornady-Marshall Theater at College Park in Grand Island.

This addition of over 6000 square feet will include dressing rooms, set construction space, costume and prop storage, a green room for the actors, a rehearsal hall, administrative offices and a new box office area.

"It’s a dream come true," says Executive Director, Linda Stanislav. "We’ve worked for years to realize this dream and through the generosity of area businesses, individuals and foundations, we’ve raised the necessary funds to get started."

"It seems fitting," remarked Sherma Jones, GILT board member, "that we have reached this milestone right before our 50th season." The 2009-2010 season will mark GILT's 50th year as Grand Island’s community theater.

Mid-Plains Construction is the general contractor and projections indicate that GILT will have a home of their own by year-end. Over the past 50 years, GILT has rehearsed and performed in many venues including Grand Island Senior High School, old Walnut Junior High, the downtown J.M. McDonald building and many others. Costumes and props have been stored in trailers, basements and storage facilities all over town.

Currently, GILT leases a storage and rehearsal building on East Hwy. 30. "We’ve worked hard to get to this point and we hope to make a positive impact on the quality of life and promotion of the arts in our area," says GILT Board President, Ray Absher. "In cooperation with College Park, we feel that this is truly a win-win for our community."
